Apex or Pent? Which Roof Is Right For Your Garage

When it comes to garages, there are two clear choices of roof- Apex or Pent shaped. But what’s the difference between these two roofing types and which is best for you? We’re here to give you a simplified overview of both types to help you make your decision.

What is an Apex Roof?apex20 garage

An apex roof is a roof with two slopes that form an “A” shape, with the “apex” being the high point or peak where the slopes meet in the middle.

There are several great benefits to apex garage roofs, such as:

  • Additional height- ideal for storing taller tools or for providing extra headroom for those wanting to use their garage as a workshop.
  • The steep gradient of the slopes enables rainwater to run off quickly, preventing a buildup from occurring and thus protecting from roof damage and flooding.
  • Traditional aesthetic to match traditional-style English homes.

With a traditional apex garage, the door will be placed at the shorter end of the slopes below the meeting point of the two, however “Reverse Apex” roofs are also available. With a Reverse Apex, the garage door sits below the longer side of the slope.

What is a Pent Roof?pent garage roof

A pent roof only has one slope, as opposed to two like an apex roof, giving it a flat appearance. It can also be called a mono-pitched roof, shed roof, or lean-to roof. Like apex roofs, pent roofs have some fantastic benefits:

  • They take up less space due to their flatter roof, meaning that they slot easily into your garden or driveway.
  • You are less likely to have to request planning permission due to the short height, as the garage is more likely to be under 2.5 metres tall.
  • It is easier and cheaper to add guttering as it is only required at one side.
  • Their contemporary style matches well with modern homes.

Hopefully, you’ve now got a good idea of which garage type best suits your needs and home. But one choice is clear, whether it’s apex or pent shape, you know you can trust Lidget to build a strong and durable garage for you.
